Desert Horses

Welcome to my horse blog, Desert Horses. We live in the desert southwest, near Palm Springs, CA, but board our horses up in our local mountains where it is cooler in the summer. I have 4 horses, all rescues. Here is the ranch up the mountains where the horses stay.

Internet problems

We're having Internet problems AGAIN and I can't post photos...sigh...I can read email, read Facebook, and visit blogs when I am tethered to my cell phone, but photos are too much data to post.  (...pulling out hair...)Hubby called Time Warner Monday night to complain, and OF COURSE, NOBODY has called back since!!!  We're ready to pull the plug on them FOR GOOD!  We are paying for a service that we are NOT receiving and we're both sick and tired of their attitude.  Frankly, they could care less...

Oak Creek Canyon, AZ

Hubby picked me up from school at 3:00 Friday afternoon and we took a weekend to drive to Arizona.  We spent our first night in Phoenix, then drove up Highway 17.  We stopped at the Montezuma's Castle, then drove through Oak Creek Canyon.  We stayed in Flagstaff for 2 nights and came home Monday.  The big storm was moving in that morning and leaves were swirling all over town!  I'm glad we had the chance to see the beautiful fall colors over in Arizona before this storm came through and blew all the leaves away!  Here are a few pics of Oak Creek Canyon, Monday morning.

Fall colors~Flagstaff aspen~Sunday Stills Challenge~102713

We took a drive west of Flagstaff yesterday to see the aspen. They are on Highway 180, which goes to the Flagstaff Snow Bowl and Nordic training center.  We were a tad late and only a few aspen still had their leaves.  Most of them are bare now.  But, there were a few hangers-on, and we stopped to take photos of those.  I found a forest road with some bare aspen and I spent some time wandering around that area while hubby looked for a place for dinner!  I'm glad we were able to see some color!  Sunday Stills Challenge for October 27, 2013.   To visit SSC, please go to this link:   http://sundaystills.wordpress.com/

Scrub jay~Wild Bird Wednesday~101613

The horse ranch is FULL of scrub jays, like this guy who landed on a pole near the wash rack last Saturday.  Unfortunately, it is also home to a Cooper's hawk.  Cathy, the owner, mentioned that the baby quail are disappearing...sigh...We had a scrub jay in our desert neighborhood for nearly 4 years.  He, too, disappeared when a Cooper's hawk took up residence.  I hope this jay stays out of harm's way.  Wild Bird Wednesday for October 16, 2013.   To visit WBW, please go to:   http://paying-ready-attention-gallery.blogspot.com/

Horse update

Not much news about the horses...same old, same old.  They are getting their woolly winter coats.  Leaves are beginning to change colors up by the ranch...autumn is in the air.  Our local mountains got their first real snowfall last week...1-2 inches.  And horses are starving, apparently, at a nearby Fresian ranch because the owner has cancer and is in the hospital, dying.

It is beautiful down here in the desert for the next week or so...mid 80's and sunny.  I am hoping to get more seeds planted out front.  I did plant my sunflower seeds last weekend.  I hope they turn out like this one up in Garner Valley.

Desert landscapes~Sunday Stills Challenge~101313

You know, I spend my weekends up with the horses, and I just don't get out into the desert enough!  There are some beautiful landscapes down here.  This area is off the Washington exit.  I forget to drive out that way and I need to do so more often.  I love to see it after a storm and see the ripples in the sand.  Sunday Stills Challenge for October 13, 2013.  To visit SSC, please go to:  http://sundaystills.wordpress.com/

Fall tree and fence~Friday's Fences~101113

Fall is definitely early this year.  In fact, our local mountains had their first SNOWFALL on Wednesday.  And, it wasn't a dusting!~They had over 2 inches of SNOW!  That is one of the earliest snowfalls on record!  :-)  Idyllwild got 2 inches.  I don't think this area got any, because it is only 4,000 feet elevation.  But, the trees are turning yellow.  I can't wait for the weekend!  Friday Fences for October 11, 2013.  To visit FF, please go to:   http://lifeaccordingtojanandjer.blogspot.com/

We have Internet again (finally!)

I'm sorry I haven't been around much lately.  Our Internet service has been so sporadic that frankly, I just gave up on it and fumed and fussed until hubby FINALLY set up another appointment yesterday for a tech to come and do what we wanted, which was to switch out our modem and check our lines.  So, we got a new modem and, when he checked the lines from the pole out back to the house, YUP...DUH...the service was "intermittent".  BUT...because he noticed it was intermittent, but it wasn't intermittent exactly when HE was online, we'll have to wait ANOTHER THREE WEEKS for a "maintenance" tech to come out.  SAY WHAT?...shaking head...I can't believe the CRUMMY service we are getting from Time Warner.  Pfffffttttttt, as our granddaughter Ellie would say!

We all went to the Living Desert Saturday for a members' breakfast (Jennifer, Ellie, me, James) and then our son, Claudia, and Ben joined us.  A good morning was had by all and Grandma was ready for lunch by 11:30!  Imagine that!  Our son wore his pedometer and said that while he was there, we walked 3.6 miles!  :-)  It was good to get out in the cool air.

Here are a few photos from our morning at the Living Desert Reserve in Palm Desert.

Internet and computer issues

I'm not sure now if it is of the internet or my computer, but something isn't working.  I have 311 photos from Saturday that I can't load because the internet times out before it can load them.  I was so frustrated yesterday that I just gave up.  Hubby has turned my desktop off and I'm working from my iPad right one but I don't have photos on it...sigh... So please bear with me while we try to get this resolved.  I have a feeling that tonight hubby will load all my hoots onto an external hard drive and that will be the end of another desktop...sigh...

Is it Wednesday already?

Gosh, I just looked and realized that I haven't posted since Friday!  And, now it is Wednesday.  Well, I had a 48 hour flu over the weekend, so my weekend was kaput.  I didn't get up to the horses.  Heck, I barely got out of bed!  Now hubby has it...sigh...I even took Monday off work to recover because I was still dizzy.  I hate losing a day to the stupid flu, but...???  So I lost a whole weekend.

Next Saturday morning, our daughter is bringing our granddaughter over and we are all going to a members' breakfast at the Living Desert Reserve.  Can't wait for little Ellie, who will be 6 months old, to have her first visit to the Living Desert.  That should be a fun morning!

So, happy HUMP DAY~Only 2 more days of school after today...whoo, whoo!
